— About ALPGI

The Pan-African Centre for LPG Sector Development

Who We Are

The African LPG Institute (ALPGI) helps African families cook with cleaner, safer fuel instead of wood and charcoal. We are an African-led network that advises and assists governments, industry, investors and communities to make the promise of clean cooking with LPG (liquified petroleum gas) a reality.

ALPGI is the successor to The Global LPG Partnership (GLPGP), the UN-backed non-profit that has supported LPG development since 2012.

We provide practical advice, expert support, training and connections to investment, drawing on African experience and international best practice. We also turn complex LPG-sector information into knowledge that is easy to use, so our stakeholders can spot opportunities, solve challenges and make better decisions.

Our Origins

Founding Partners

ALPGI was founded by two pioneering organizations in Africa's energy landscape

Founding Partner

The Global LPG Partnership (GLPGP)

GLPGP was formed in 2012 under the UN Sustainable Energy for All initiative. GLPGP has in the last decade worked closely with African governments and their private sectors to develop comprehensive national LPG plans, funded by the European Union, the World Bank and UNDP.

By forming ALPGI, GLPGP marks the completion of its 12-year mandate as the UN- and EU-backed global LPG development organization. In its place, ALPGI begins a new era focused purely on expanding LPG in Africa.

Founding Partner

The African Refiners and Distributors Association (ARDA)

ARDA is the first ever pan-African organisation for the downstream oil sector. Founded in 2006, ARDA Members are African oil refiners, importers, terminal operators, major marketers, distributors and industry regulators.

ARDA is a platform for improved interaction between African refiners and distributors, and international marketing, trading, engineering and financial services companies. ARDA also promotes African Energy Security by seeking to maximise the processing of African crude oil in African refineries.
